Roofers in Sale
We cover Sale, Brooklands, Ashton upon Mersey and Sale Moor, travelling from Macclesfield via Wilmslow and the motorway. Sale is a railway suburb with Victorian houses near the Bridgewater Canal and a great many 1930s semis, so most of our work here is on slate roofs a century old and tiled roofs approaching their own replacement.

Sale's houses and roofs
The Bridgewater Canal reached Sale in the eighteenth century and the railway in 1849, and the town grew as a suburb of Manchester. Brooklands and the streets near the canal have large Victorian and Edwardian houses with slate roofs, while Sale Moor and Ashton upon Mersey filled up with interwar semis built in the 1920s and 1930s.
Many of those semis now have hip-to-gable loft conversions and rear dormers, and most have a flat-roofed extension or garage somewhere.
What goes wrong on Sale roofs
- 1930s roofs past their best
- Original underfelt, nail fixings and ridge mortar failing on interwar semis.
- Loft conversion joints
- Hip-to-gable conversions and dormers where new work meets the old roof.
- Victorian slate
- Large slate roofs in Brooklands with nail sickness and old valleys.
- Flat-roofed extensions
- Felt roofs on rear extensions and garages that pond and blister.
Planning and roof work in Sale
Sale is in Trafford, so planning and building control are with Trafford Council. Trafford Council has designated conservation areas in parts of Sale, so check whether your street is in one before planning a change to the roof. Rear dormers and hip-to-gable conversions on semis outside those areas are often permitted development within the volume limits, and they always need Building Regulations approval.
Council: Trafford Council. Postcodes: M33. Getting to you: We reach Sale through Wilmslow and on the M56 and M60.

Roofing in Sale: questions
Do you cover Sale Moor and Ashton upon Mersey?
Yes. We cover the whole of M33, including Brooklands, Sale Moor and Ashton upon Mersey, along with Altrincham and Timperley.
Is it better to repair or re-roof a 1930s semi?
If the tiles are sound and the problem is local, repair it. If the felt has perished across the roof or the ridge and fixings are failing everywhere, re-roofing on new membrane and battens saves repeated scaffolding costs.
Can you fix a leaking flat roof on my extension?
Yes. We check the deck first. If it is sound, a repair may do; if it is soft, we replace the roof as a warm roof in GRP or EPDM.
