Roofers in Congleton

Congleton is our nearest neighbour to the south, a few miles down the A536. It is a mill town like Macclesfield, with Victorian brick terraces and mill buildings along the River Dane, so the roofs are familiar to us: Welsh slate, tall chimney stacks and plenty of roofs that are now well over a century old.

Congleton's houses and roofs

Congleton's silk and ribbon mills brought rows of terraced housing in the nineteenth century, much of it red brick with Welsh slate roofs and chimney stacks shared between neighbours. Larger Victorian houses line the roads out of the centre, and the twentieth century added estates of semis and bungalows on the edges of town, often with concrete tiles.

The town sits below The Cloud, also called Bosley Cloud, on the edge of the hills, and the houses on the higher, eastern side get more wind and rain than those in the valley. Exposed slopes there lose ridges and verges more often.

What goes wrong on Congleton roofs

Nail sickness on terraces
Original slate slipping across whole slopes because the old iron nails have rusted through.
Shared chimney stacks
Stacks between neighbours on terraces that need repointing and new flashings, with both owners involved.
Concrete tiles on post-war homes
Tiles that have weathered, gone porous and gathered moss, and ridge mortar that has cracked.
Wind on exposed edges
Verges and ridges lifted on the higher eastern side of town facing the hills.

Planning and roof work in Congleton

Congleton is in Cheshire East. The historic centre has a conservation area and listed buildings, including former mills, where roof work should keep the original slate and details. Removing a chimney stack shared with a neighbour usually brings in the Party Wall etc. Act 1996, so we talk to both owners before work starts.

Roofing in Congleton: questions

Do you cover Astbury, Mossley and Buglawton?

Yes. We cover the CW12 area, including Astbury, Mossley, Buglawton and the villages towards Mow Cop and Biddulph.

Can you relay my terrace's slate roof using the original slates?

Usually, yes. We strip the roof, sort the sound slates, relay them on new battens and membrane, and make up the shortfall with matching reclaimed Welsh slate.

My neighbour shares my chimney. Can you still repair it?

Yes. Repairs to a shared stack are best agreed with both owners. If the work affects the party wall, such as removing the stack, the Party Wall Act may apply.
