Roofers in Alderley Edge

We cover Alderley Edge and Nether Alderley, a few miles west of Macclesfield along Alderley Road. Many of the village's houses are large Victorian villas built for Manchester merchants after the railway arrived in the 1840s, and their roofs are big, steep and detailed, with slate, ornate ridges, finials, tall chimneys and plenty of lead.

Alderley Edge's houses and roofs

When the railway reached Alderley in 1842, Manchester's cotton merchants began building substantial villas on the slopes below the Edge, many in stone or brick with Welsh slate roofs, decorative bargeboards and several chimney stacks each. Later decades filled in with large detached houses, and in recent years many have been extended or rebuilt.

These roofs reward careful work. Steep pitches, multiple hips and valleys, lead-lined gutters, turrets and dormers all need matching materials and good leadwork, and the wooded slopes of the Edge keep many roofs shaded and damp.

What goes wrong on Alderley Edge roofs

Lead valleys and gutters
Long valleys and hidden gutters on Victorian villas where old lead has cracked or been patched.
Ornate details
Decorative ridges, finials and bargeboards that weather and need repair to match, not replacement with plain fittings.
Several chimney stacks
Houses with four or more stacks, each with flaunching, pots and flashings to keep up.
Leaves and moss
The woods around the Edge drop leaves into valleys and gutters every autumn and keep roofs damp.

Planning and roof work in Alderley Edge

Alderley Edge is in Cheshire East, and parts of the village are conservation areas with listed buildings among the Victorian villas. Changes to roof materials, chimneys or roof windows facing the road in a conservation area may need planning permission, and listed buildings need consent for most changes. Repairs in matching slate and lead are usually straightforward.
