Roofers in Bollington

Bollington is on our doorstep, a few minutes north of Macclesfield, and we cover it along with Kerridge, Rainow and Pott Shrigley. Its roofs are some of the most distinctive in Cheshire: stone cottages built from Kerridge stone, mill terraces with Welsh slate, and heavy stone slate roofs on older farmhouses on the hill.

Bollington's houses and roofs

Bollington grew around its cotton mills, Clarence Mill and Adelphi Mill among them, and the terraces built for mill workers climb the valley sides. Many are built of buff Kerridge sandstone, quarried on Kerridge Hill above the town for centuries. The same stone was split into heavy stone slates for roofs, which you still see on older cottages and farm buildings, while Welsh slate covers most of the Victorian terraces.

The town is tucked under Kerridge Hill and White Nancy, and the higher streets and the hamlets towards Rainow are exposed to the weather coming off the hills. Roofs here deal with more wind-driven rain than those in the middle of Macclesfield.

What goes wrong on Bollington roofs

Stone slate roofs
Heavy stone slates that slip when their pegs or nails fail, often on timbers that need checking too.
Steep terraces
Terraces on steep streets where access and scaffolding need careful planning.
Exposed ridges and verges
Wind off the hills lifting ridges and verges on the higher streets and in Rainow.
Stone chimneys
Stone and brick stacks with worn joints and old lead or mortar flashings.

Planning and roof work in Bollington

Bollington is in Cheshire East, and much of the town is a conservation area with many listed buildings, including mills and workers' housing. Replacing stone slate or Welsh slate with a different material is unlikely to be acceptable there. The hills east of the town lead into the Peak District National Park, which is its own planning authority for properties inside its boundary.

Yes. We strip and sort the stone slates, check the timbers, and relay the sound stones with matching reclaimed stone for any that are broken.

New and reclaimed stone slate can sometimes be found, but whether it suits your roof depends on the size and thickness needed to match, which we check before quoting.
