Roofers in Crewe

We cover Crewe, Shavington, Wistaston and Haslington, travelling from Macclesfield through Congleton and Sandbach. Crewe was built by the railway, and streets of Victorian terraced houses built for railway workers still make up much of the town, so a lot of our work here is on slate roofs and shared chimney stacks that are well over a hundred years old.

Crewe's houses and roofs

Crewe grew from a small township into a major town after the Grand Junction Railway built its works here in the 1840s. The railway company built streets of brick terraces for its workers, and private builders followed, so central Crewe and areas like the West End have long runs of Victorian terraces with Welsh slate roofs, brick chimney stacks shared between neighbours and back extensions with lean-to roofs.

Twentieth-century Crewe added interwar council housing, post-war estates and, more recently, large new developments around the edges of the town, mostly with concrete tile roofs.

What goes wrong on Crewe roofs

Original slate past its life
Terraces where slates slip all over the roof because nails and battens have failed.
Back extension roofs
Lean-to slate or felt roofs over kitchens and bathrooms, where the flashing to the main wall fails.
Shared chimneys
Stacks shared between terraced houses that need repointing, reflaunching or removing.
Mixed repairs
Terraces where one house has been re-roofed in concrete tiles and the neighbour still has slate, with a poor joint between.

Planning and roof work in Crewe

Crewe is in Cheshire East. Most terraces are not in conservation areas, so like-for-like re-roofing normally needs no planning permission, though re-covering more than a quarter of the roof needs Building Regulations sign-off. Where two neighbours share a party wall and chimney, we explain how the work affects next door before it starts.

Council: Cheshire East Council. Postcodes: CW1 and CW2. Getting to you: Crewe is south-west of Macclesfield, through Congleton and Sandbach on the A534.

Roofing in Crewe: questions

Can you re-roof a Crewe terrace in slate rather than concrete tiles?

Yes. Natural slate keeps the look of the street and is lighter than concrete tiles, which matters on roofs built for slate.

Do you repair lean-to roofs on back extensions?

Yes. We repair or re-roof lean-tos and renew the lead flashing where they meet the main house, which is where most of them leak.

Do you cover Shavington, Wistaston and Haslington?

Yes. We cover CW1 and CW2, including Shavington, Wistaston, Haslington and Leighton, and Willaston towards Nantwich.
