Roofers in Altrincham
We cover Altrincham, Bowdon, Hale and Timperley, travelling from Macclesfield along the A538 through Wilmslow. Bowdon and Hale have some of the largest Victorian houses in Greater Manchester, built for merchants when the railway arrived, and their roofs are slate, steep and full of lead, chimneys and detail.

Altrincham's houses and roofs
When the railway from Manchester reached Altrincham in 1849, Bowdon's hillside became one of the most sought-after addresses for the city's merchants. Large villas in brick and stone went up with Welsh slate roofs, turrets, gables and multiple chimneys, and Hale followed with substantial Edwardian houses. Altrincham itself has Victorian terraces near the centre and market.
Timperley and the outer parts of Hale Barns grew later, with interwar and post-war semis and detached houses, mostly tiled.
What goes wrong on Altrincham roofs

- Big Victorian slate roofs in Bowdon and Hale with slipping slates and valleys that need relining.

- Lead bays and dormers
- Traditional lead work on bays, dormers and porches that has split with age.
- Interwar roofs in Timperley
- Tiled roofs on 1930s semis with tired felt and loose ridges.
Planning and roof work in Altrincham
Altrincham is in the borough of Trafford, so planning and building control are with Trafford Council. Bowdon has a large conservation area, and there are others in Hale and Altrincham town centre, where roof materials, chimneys and roof windows facing the street are protected. Matching slate and lead repairs are usually straightforward; changes of material are not.
