Roofers in Glossop
We cover Glossop, Hadfield, Charlesworth and Tintwistle, coming north from Macclesfield through Disley and Hayfield. Glossop is a gritstone mill town at the foot of the Pennines, below the Snake Pass, and its stone terraces with slate and stone slate roofs take a lot of wind and rain.

Glossop's houses and roofs
Glossop grew around cotton mills in the nineteenth century, much of it as Howard Town, built by the Dukes of Norfolk around the town centre and Norfolk Square. Its terraces, mills and chapels are built of dark local gritstone, with Welsh slate on most roofs and stone slates on older cottages and in the outlying villages.
Facing the Pennine moors, Glossop is one of the wettest towns we cover. Gritstone walls and chimneys hold water, mortar weathers fast, and gutters and valleys carry a lot of rain. Ventilation in old stone houses matters too, as damp air in the loft condenses on cold roofs.
What goes wrong on Glossop roofs
- Wind-driven rain
- Rain forced under slates and flashings on exposed slopes facing the moors.
- Stone chimney stacks
- Gritstone stacks with open joints that let water down into the house.
- Gutters and valleys overloaded
- Heavy rainfall overflowing undersized or blocked gutters and valleys.
- Condensation in lofts
- Unventilated roof spaces in old stone houses where moisture rots battens.
Planning and roof work in Glossop
Glossop is in Derbyshire, with planning and building control at High Peak Borough Council. The town centre around Norfolk Square and Old Glossop are conservation areas with listed buildings, where slate and stone roofs and gritstone chimneys should be kept. The moors to the east are in the Peak District National Park, which has its own planning authority.

Roofing in Glossop: questions
Do you work on gritstone terraces in Glossop?
Yes. We repair and relay slate and stone slate roofs on stone terraces, repoint stone chimneys, and renew the lead where roofs meet stone walls.
Why does my loft get damp in winter?
Often it is condensation, not a leak: warm moist air from the house meeting a cold roof with too little ventilation. We check the roof first, then look at ventilation at the eaves and ridge.
Do you cover Hadfield, Charlesworth and Tintwistle?
Yes. We cover the SK13 area, including Old Glossop, Hadfield, Padfield, Charlesworth, Gamesley and Tintwistle.
