Roofers in Bramhall

We cover Bramhall, Woodford and the edge of Cheadle Hulme, coming up from Macclesfield through Poynton. Bramhall is mostly twentieth-century housing: interwar semis, post-war detached houses and plenty of bungalows, many since extended upwards with dormers or outwards with flat-roofed extensions.

Bramhall's houses and roofs

Bramall Hall, the Tudor timber-framed house in its park, is the oldest building in a suburb that mostly grew after the railway station opened in the nineteenth century and then expanded fast between the wars and after 1945. That gives Bramhall a lot of 1930s semis with hipped clay or concrete tile roofs, detached houses from the 1950s to 1970s, and many bungalows.

A great many of those homes have since been altered: dormer bungalows, hip-to-gable loft conversions, and single-storey extensions with flat roofs. The roofs are not old by slate standards, but the alterations are where most problems start.

What goes wrong on Bramhall roofs

Hip-to-gable conversions
Joins between the original hipped roof and the new gable, where tiles and felt do not quite meet.
Bungalow dormers
Large dormers on bungalows with flat roofs and long flashings.
Interwar tiled roofs
1930s roofs with original felt and ridge mortar now well past their best.
Extension flat roofs
Felt roofs on rear and side extensions that have blistered or gone soft.

Planning and roof work in Bramhall

Bramhall is in the borough of Stockport, so planning and building control go to Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council. There are conservation areas around the village centre and Bramall Park. Hip-to-gable loft conversions and rear dormers are often permitted development for houses outside those areas, within volume limits; bungalows and front changes need more care.

Roofing in Bramhall: questions

Do you work on bungalow roofs?

Yes. Bungalows make up a large share of our Bramhall work: re-roofs, dormer repairs, gutters and fascias, and moss removal.

Can you fix a leak where my loft conversion meets the old roof?

Yes. These joints are a common source of leaks. We lift the tiles at the join, check the membrane and flashings, and remake the detail properly.

Do you cover Woodford and Cheadle Hulme?

Yes. Woodford is in SK7 with Bramhall, and Cheadle Hulme is in SK8 with Cheadle; we cover nearby Poynton too.
